Flt Lt Richard Anthony Barnwell

My 102 connections are as follows:

Flt Lt Richard Anthony Barnwell was my third cousin (once removed), one of the three sons of Frank Barnwell the Bristol aircraft designer who were all pilots and all killed during WWII.

BARNWELL Richard Anthony Flt Lt 36163 102 Sqdn Royal Air Force died. 29/10/1940 age 24. Son of Frank Sowter & Marjorie of Fleet, Hampshire.

28-29 October 1940

102 Squadron - Whitley V P5082 DY-L - Op. Bremen

The aircraft took off from Linton-on-Ouse at 1658 hrs on an operation to Bremen. Signalled a successful attack but subsequently crashed in the North Sea 20 miles east of Aberdeen, Scotland. The crew are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
