John Welsh

A litle about John's first and only mission.

Airborne 0017 on the 28th May 1944, MZ649 DY-Y took off from Pocklington to Bourg Leopold.

Whilst on the way home they were shot down from 8,000 feet by a night-fighter whose shots killed both Gunners.

The crash site was not established and both Air Gunners were buried on the 31st May 1944 at Antwerpen-Deurne. Their graves are now located in the Schoonselhof Cemetery.

F/S L.Collins initially evaded until captured in Antwerp on the 10th Jul 1944 and interned in Camp L7. PoW No.386.
F/O G.H.Godsell initially evaded until betrayed by Ren_ van Muylem in the 11th Jun 1944 and interned in Camp L3, PoW No.6298. F/O A.H.S.Huycke also evaded and was captured in Antwerp on the 13th Jun 1944 and interned in Camp L3, PoW No.6301.
P/O G.H.Scott was also betrayed by Ren_ van Muylem and interned in Camp L3, PoW No.6306.
Sgt John Welsh also evaded until betrayed and capture in Antwerp and interned in Camp L7, PoW No.245.
